Dresses

Discover our collection of handmade Viking dresses for women, reconstructed from 9th–10th century archaeological finds and sewn by hand from natural linen and wool.

What did Viking women wear?

Viking women typically wore two layers: a long linen underdress (serk) reaching the ankles, topped with an apron dress (hangerok or smokkr) suspended from the shoulders by two brooches. This distinctive silhouette is documented in grave finds from Birka (Sweden) and Hedeby (Germany) and is the basis for most of our reconstructions.

What is a Viking apron dress (hangerok)?

The hangerok is a sleeveless overdress worn over a linen underdress, held in place by a pair of oval brooches at the shoulders. It is the most characteristic garment of Viking Age women's fashion, found in graves across Scandinavia and the Baltic region dating to the 8th–10th century. Our versions are cut and sewn following archaeological patterns from Birka finds.

What fabric are Viking dresses made from?

Historical Viking women's clothing was made from linen and wool — the two most common textiles of the era. Underdresses were typically linen for comfort against the skin, while overdresses were wool for warmth and structure. All Othala Craft dresses are sewn by hand from natural fibres with period-accurate construction techniques.

Are Viking dresses suitable for LARP and reenactment?

Yes. Our dresses are used by historical reenactors, LARP players and cosplayers throughout Europe. Available in a range of colours from natural undyed linen to embroidered wool, each piece is in stock and ready to ship worldwide.
