Cloaks

Explore our collection of handmade Viking cloaks and capes, reconstructed from 9th–11th century archaeological finds and sewn by hand from natural wool.

What cloaks did Vikings wear?

Viking cloaks were typically semicircular or rectangular wool mantles fastened at the right shoulder with a brooch (fibula), leaving the sword arm free. The most documented examples come from finds at Hedeby (Germany) and Birka (Sweden). Our cloaks are cut and sewn directly from these archaeological patterns, with optional embroidery and silk trim.

What material are Viking cloaks made from?

Historical Viking cloaks were made from woven wool — thick enough to provide warmth in the northern climate but light enough to move freely in. All Othala Craft cloaks are hand-sewn from natural wool in historically documented weave structures including diamond twill and tabby.

What colours were Viking cloaks?

Archaeological and pictorial evidence shows Vikings used plant-based dyes to produce a range of colours. Our cloaks are available in natural grey, beige, brown, honey yellow, forest green and fiery red — all shades achievable with period-accurate dye plants such as woad, weld and madder.

Are Viking cloaks suitable for LARP and reenactment?

Yes. Our cloaks are used at historical festivals, reenactment events and LARP games across Europe. Durable, warm and historically accurate — all items are in stock and ready to ship worldwide.
