Caftans

Explore our collection of handmade Viking kaftans (also spelled caftans), reconstructed from 8th–10th century finds at Hedeby and Birka and sewn by hand from natural wool.

What is a Viking kaftan?

The Viking kaftan — also known as a Klappenrock or flap coat — is a long-sleeved, front-opening coat documented in graves at Hedeby (Denmark) and Birka (Sweden). It was worn over a tunic as an outer layer, often made from fine wool and decorated with embroidery or silk trim at the collar and cuffs. It was a garment associated with wealth and travel.

What is the difference between a kaftan and a tunic?

A tunic is a closed garment pulled over the head, while a kaftan opens at the front — either fully or partially. The Viking kaftan typically has a front opening secured with clasps or buttons and is longer and more structured than a simple tunic. It served as an outer coat rather than an undergarment.

What material are Viking kaftans made from?

Historical Viking kaftans were made from wool, often with silk trim imported via trade routes from Byzantium and the Arab world. All Othala Craft kaftans are hand-sewn from natural wool with exterior stitching done by hand, following construction methods documented in archaeological finds.

Are Viking kaftans suitable for LARP and reenactment?

Yes. Our kaftans are used by historical reenactors and LARP players across Europe. They work equally well as standalone outerwear or layered over a tunic for a complete historically accurate look. All items are in stock and ready to ship worldwide.
