Pillbox

Discover our handmade Viking pillbox cap, reconstructed from a 9th–10th century find at Haithabu (Hedeby, Germany) and sewn by hand from natural wool.

What is a Viking pillbox cap?

The Viking pillbox cap is a flat-topped, cylindrical wool hat documented in a find from Haithabu (Hedeby) in northern Germany, dating to the 9th–10th century. It is one of the most archaeologically precise hat forms from the Viking Age — compact, close-fitting and practical for everyday wear. Our reconstruction follows the original find dimensions and construction method.

What is Haithabu (Hedeby)?

Haithabu, known in English as Hedeby, was one of the most important Viking Age trading settlements in northern Europe, located in present-day northern Germany near the Danish border. It was active from the 8th to the 11th century and has yielded some of the best-preserved Viking Age textile finds in the world, including the pillbox cap.

What material is the pillbox cap made from?

The original Hedeby find was made from wool. Our reconstruction is hand-sewn from natural wool with period-accurate construction, following the shape and proportions of the archaeological source.

Is the pillbox cap suitable for LARP and reenactment?

Yes. The Haithabu pillbox cap is a historically documented and recognisable piece of Viking Age headwear, popular with reenactors who prioritise archaeological accuracy. Check availability — this item is produced in limited quantities.
