Headbands were popular during the Viking Age. Small fragments of fabric – primarily silk – have frequently been discovered in women’s graves, positioned near the temples. Such headbands sometimes featured attached elements resembling “earflaps”.
This is a beautiful component of early medieval women’s attire. Most archaeological finds of this type – where pieces of jewelry were suspended from headbands – originate from Slavic graves.
The headband is crafted from 100% red linen and overlaid with a layer of hand-woven silk (100% silk) in a golden shade. The top layer is silk woven in the historical “Red Astana” pattern from the 7th–8th centuries (the original nishiki silk, with beaded medallions enclosing pairs of phoenixes and lions on a red background, is held by the Tokyo National Museum). The “earflaps” on the sides are also made of silk.
Length of headband 106 cm (41,73 in), band width 3 cm (1,18 in).
Silver and gold elements and the scarf are not included in the sale.
