Description

A delicate, thin scarf made of fine 100% wool, perfect for tying around the forehead or covering the head. The fabric is lightweight and airy, giving the impression of a thin muslin. The wool is very fine and gentle on the skin and does not itch.

The scarf is large enough to be worn in many ways: tied around the forehead as a headband, wrapped over the hair as a head covering and knotted at the back of the neck, worn loosely around the neck, or draped over the shoulders as a light shawl. It goes well with an apron dress, a tunic or a linen underdress and completes a historical outfit for reenactment, medieval markets and festivals.

The color is light yellow. The scarf has been naturally dyed with goldenrod, so the shade may vary slightly and every piece is unique.

Historical background: in the early Middle Ages, women – especially married women – covered their heads, as iconography and written sources such as chronicles and psalters indicate. A head covering also protected the hair during work and from the sun. Textiles were dyed with plants, and plant dyes such as madder are known from Viking Age textile finds.

Care: hand wash in cool water with a wool detergent and dry flat, away from direct sunlight – this way the natural dye keeps its color longer.

The dimensions are approximately 68 cm (26,77 in) x 150 cm (59,06 in).
